Winter Backpacking Gear
Winter backpacking gear is not too different from your standard 3 season set up, there is just more of it and variations on the same stuff. There are also a few things that you will be taking with you that you would probably not be taking at all if it were not winter. This page will focus in on those items that are truly winter specific.
WINTER GEAR:
Snowshoes
Crampons
Ice Axes
Skis
4 Season Tents
Winter Sleeping Bags and Pads (COMING SOON!) Winter Stoves (COMING SOON!) Winter Boots and Footwear (COMING SOON!) Winter Clothing (COMING SOON!) Winter Accessories (COMING SOON!)
You will probably not need all of this stuff every time you venture out during the winter months, but you will most likely need at least a couple of the items. Your 3 season backpacking kit is very versatile and in many situations you may only need a warmer sleeping bag, warmer clothes and a couple extra items to be perfectly comfortable in the winter. Many areas require that you use snowshoes or crampons whenever there is significant snow on the trails and it is always good to follow these rules. Learning the basics of winter gear will also enhance your 3 season backpacking experience by teaching you how to be more comfortable in colder weather. Some of this winter gear will also carry over into standard backpacking allowing you to do more and to go more places during the spring, summer and fall. After becoming comfortable with and ice axe and crampons you will be able to traverse snow covered terrain more comfortably and confidently during spring and summer in the high country.
